Government Hazard Tree Removal Program Begins, Sets Deadline for Enrollment The first tree has been cut in the Government Hazard Tree Removal Program, marking the next phase of recovery for Paradise after the Camp Fire. The Government Program is funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and administered by the State of California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and CalRecycle and is the first of its kind where trees on private property can be removed through a FEMA funded program. The Government Program has set a deadline to enroll of December 31, 2020.
The removal of hazardous trees was identified as a tier 1 priority in the Long-Term Community Recovery Plan adopted by Paradise Town Council in June 2019. Over 4,700 properties in the Town of Paradise are already enrolled in the Government Program, and nearly 20,000 trees have already been assessed by arborists. The State estimates that ultimately 70,000 trees will be removed by the Government Hazard Tree Removal Program in the Camp Fire burn scar. To be eligible for the program, a tree must be so damaged by the Camp Fire that a certified arborist or forester determines it could fall on an eligible public or private road or public right of way within the next five years.
Property owners in the Camp Fire footprint must remove hazardous trees on their property. To sign up for the Government Program, contact the Tree ROE Center or the Paradise Tree Advocates.
